Elf Power - In A Cave - 2008

"Duh,, duh... album barunya elf power.. sound nya skarang lbh oldish.. salah satu band psychedelic/rock fav gue.... ini dia yg gue cari slama ini akhir nya datang juga,, hehe... otw download jd blom bisa ngsh review lbh..." -clapclapclap

Genre : Indie/Rock/Psychedelic

lf Power's ninth album, In A Cave, blasts them past familiar territories and lands them on exciting new terrain. One of their most psychedelic records, it offers thirteen otherworldly tracks of chugging Krautrock rhythms, sing-song pop, and harmonically dense balladry. With In A Cave these seasoned indie rockers find the perfect synthesis of their organic live performances, instinctual ensemble playing and open-hearted experimentation.

Like the tiny creatures from which they take their name, Elf Power are often overlooked when it comes time to take stock of the Elephant 6 collective. Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, and Olivia Tremor Control tend to dominate that Athens, Georgia-focused spotlight, and yet, Elf Power continue to record and release albums at a very consistent rate.

In a Cave, Elf Power's ninth album, is the latest entry in the indie/psych band's oeuvre. It comes out March 25 on Rykodisc, and while there is no talk of a tour yet, Elf Power are usually pretty consistent in that area too.

The d'Urbervilles - We Are The Hunters - 2008

"Band dr canada dengan style post-punk baru yg di bawain The d'Urbervilles lbh beragam, dr character voc yg non-new wave lbh ke era avant-pop walau dr segi post-punk nya msh terasa bgt di ketukan drum, dan musik yg lbh baru dengan di tambahkannya suara glockenspiel, clapin and melodi2 guitar di tengah2 lagu... key track di lagu hot tips sama dragnet membuat cita rasa post-punk tersendiri bagi The d'Urbervilles..." - clapclapclap

Genre : Indie/Rock/Post-Punk

It’s a bad season not to have a snow shovel. In fact, it’s snowing in Hogtown right now and, unfortunately for me, I broke my landlord’s shovel this past weekend while attempting to clear out a place to park my friend’s car. Promising that I’d replace it, I loaded We Are the Hunters, The D’Urbervilles debut full-length, into my iPod and dutifully made my way over to the local mall (ugh…).

Last week, when I featured standout track, “Hot tips,” I described the song as confident, seductive and pounding. Having since had the time to give We Are the Hunters a few more listens in its entirety while searching for a snow clearing implement, I have no problem attributing those adjectives to the rest of the album as well.

Opening in admirable instrumental fashion with the pervasive mood-setter, “Knock Out the Fat,” and followed by the menacing title track, it becomes obvious early on that there’s just something knowingly cocksure and sinister about this entire release. I mean, there I was walking across the parking lot of the Gerrard Square mall, a 25 year-old over-privileged dork with a large coffee in one hand and bags of groceries in the other, and just listening to We Are the Hunters had me feeling like a tough, streetwise Tarantino character who had a shotgun tucked safely beside his skim milk.

Maybe it’s lyrics like the anthemic “We are hunters / it’s time for killing“ (from the title track) or the weighty bass of songs like “This is the Life,” but this album just seems to lend a certain sense of badass gravitas (now there’s an album title!) to an everyday stroll.

Of course, at their worst, The D’Urbervilles can run slightly into Killers territory, but thankfully this is rare. More often than not they evoke the riotous energy of early Constantines (hmm, it seems I’ve been beaten to the punch on both of these comparisons by Chart and Exclaim! respectively…alas). There’s also a nice vocal interplay here between the urgent bursts of group shouting and the Ray Davies-esque croon of Tim Bruton (as evidenced on both “Hot Tips” and the title track). However, as the previously mentioned opener suggests, The D’Urbervilles seem just as confident letting their explosive riffage do the talking, with quite a few of the songs featuring large instrumental breaks that are just as engaging as their vocalized counterparts.

Unfortunately for me—not to mention my overly passive landlord who likely won’t press the issue—the mall was sold out of snow shovels, but at least I got to feel like a hotshot as I strutted my stuff through Home Depot.

Genre : Indie/Disco-House/Psychedelic

"Ra. The UK disco dons have gone all out after their Death From Abroad release and decided to indulge some. And quite rightly so I say. Man, Mock and Toof have gone all crazy on us like whoa! Really dog, they’ve taken the wonky disco thing and made it their own, put their stamp on it and let it out into the wild. For example, ‘Beat Up’ is one of those kind of tracks that works a la Wagner, each of the instruments, or in this case tracks, do their own thing and are seemingly unrelated, but put them together and you find that the sounds are harmonious. Brilliant off-kilter disco that’s part Harvey, part Emperor Machine. Sick. Even their work on the reggae-tinged ‘Lucky’ jams along like crazy funky drummer high on life, buckwheat and pop powder. Trust, Tiny Sticks are killing it right now. If you were wise, you’d be on the train, like yesterday. The hottest stuff this side of LA."

Autocollants - Why Couldn't Things Just Stay The Same?(1999)

" Band asal California Vokalisnya cewe, totalnya 13 tracks... ini album the best nya mereka di taun 1999 setelah beberapa taun sebelumnya bubar<--- menurut apa yang tertulis di blog. Setelah gw dengerin, warna musiknya mirip Cherry Bombshell pas ngeluarin album pertama yang isinya 6 lagu itu... ;BACAR; B.I.T.C.H; Flowing Marjans; Super ego... dan 2 lagu sisanya gw lupa judulnya. My Bloody Valentine versi softnya bukan box kalo gw bilang... bener2 soft... kalo misalkan 11 taun yang lalu sempet dateng ke indies party di dago tea house... ngedengerin ini bikin kita kaya naek angkot kebon kelapa-dago.. gila perumpamaan gw sungguh realistis sekale!!! " - killjoy2000

===---------------------------------------

California's Autocollants compiled their greatest "hits" in 1999, after having disbanded a few years earlier. The indie pop quartet had flourished in the southern California pop scene in 1996 and 1997 and began Shelflife Records along the way. With releases on labels such as Rover Records, Tinseltone, Drive-In, Cher Doll, and Shelflife, the band had many blissful pop gems to chose from while compiling this disc. Most of the tracks are relaxed, dreamy indie pop, with Laura Watling's vocals leading the way. Guitar, bass, drums, synthesizers, trumpets, tambourine, and keyboards also find their way onto the 13-track disc. "Candy Coated Kisses," "Four and a Half," and "Apple Vines" are definite highlights, incorporating lively pop tones and summery instrumentation.

The lyrics are often bittersweet commentaries on simple themes. The disc includes a sample of previously released material, as well as three new tracks: "We Can't Have it All," "Another Thursday," and "Beyond the Reef." "Trio" was re-recorded especially for Why Couldn't Things Just Stay the Same?. Ed Mazzucco and Tim Morris perform most of the guitar work, while Dwayne Palasek adds subtle drums throughout. Jon Chaikin guests on guitar on three tracks. [allmusic]

Bitcrush - Epilogue In Waves (02/2008)

Genre : Indie/Experimental/Shoegaze

Arguably the most anticipated release in n5MD’s history, “Epilogue in Waves”, the third album from owner Mike Cadoo’s Bitcrush project, continues the fine traditions of his imprint, melding an emotional aesthetic to much of his music. Two years in the making, this is his most cohesive and fully-realised record yet, as the Californian-based musician advances the evolutionary nature of the Bitcrush sound.

‘The Bitcrush sound’ is a key component in this album’s appeal. This is clearly the work of Cadoo, no other band or artist can sound like this. Throughout “Epilogue...” Bitcrush switches between warm ambient synthscapes or rich, electronic-laced shoegaze, often presenting tracks that effortlessly braid both styles together. He deftly navigates between both, while structuring them into his trademarked, epic compositions.

Cadoo, in fact, does epic by the bucketload, but it is the seamless mix of organic and electronic instrumentation that is the most striking aspect of Bitcrush on this form. Resonating guitar textures float freely with dreamy synths, as echoic vocals dissolve amidst the electronically-charged live drum sound. In short, those with no prior knowledge of Bitcrush could be forgiven for thinking that this was the work of a fully-fledged band rather than just one man. “Of Days”, for example, unusually follows a verse-chorus-verse like structure rising from a tranquil passage of slo-mo beats and clouded melodies into a full-blown ‘stadium-rock’ chorus.

While many artists simply over-load their music with a succession of effects, Bitcrush is different. His music is measured with every tone, note, melody and electronic pulse strategically placed. The electronics in particular, much like the vocals, do not insist upon the listener, instead they augment the overall feel of each track. There is a certain comfortable solace to a piece like “Pearl”, for example, that one would associate with a late-night drive through deserted, rain-swept roads. Cadoo spends several minutes developing such a nocturnal atmosphere, the cavernous synth waves emanating with a degree of warmth. Only the forceful volley of percussion halfway through will wake you from such a glorious cocoon of sound.

“An Island, A Peninsula”, meanwhile, nods to those early Sigur Ros comparisons with its torrents of arcing guitar and revolving, crashing percussion, while the taut Joy Division-esque bassline of “Epilogue in Tides” shifts the melodic focus from the layers of heavenly synthesizer and guitar. Cadoo, it should be noted, is also adept when it comes to changing the pace of his records, many albums often suffer from lack of variety where bands take a good idea and run it into the ground. Not on “Epilogue in Waves” though; whether it is the euphoric William Orbit-like ambience of “Prologue” or the pulsating end of “Pearl”, the Bitcrush experience remains riveting due to Cadoo’s guidance.

Of course, all of this is underpinned by the level of emotion we’ve come to expect of n5MD. But then Cadoo has been leaving clues all along, even the ‘Bitcrush’ moniker hints at a man/machine existence, an existence where man controls such devices to his advantage -- and this is where Cadoo’s Bitcrush project excels. Whatever your take is, “Epilogue in Waves” is clearly the soul of the Bitcrush machine.

Lights Out Asia - Tanks And Recognizers (n5MD, 2007)

...electric drum beat nya lbh main ketimbang hammock or july skies alias lbh upbeat cuma salah satu fav album gue juga hehe... -clapclapclap

Wisconsin post-celestial-shoegazer trio Lights Out Asia delivers their sophomore full length and debut for n5MD titled Tanks and Recognizers. This follow-up to their critic and fan favorite Garmonia (sun sea sky) pushes their sound far forward with a palpable intensity by giving a seemingly subliminal nod to some of the more electronically minded ethereal bands of the mid-'80s to early '90s like Breathless, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine or even the more emotionally rich moments of Colourbox. Lights Out Asia who is actually influenced more by a more current crop of like-minded artists such as Mogwai, Massive Attack, and Robin Guthrie’s various works, blend them all, the erstwhile and contemporary, with an updated style, feel and modern expansiveness. Tanks and Recognizers is a cinematic and ambitiously crafted album which could easily fit into any indie rock or electronic music collection. Soaring, floating, and moving forward as it pulls you in to its hopeful heart consuming ebb and flow of electronics, guitars and lofty vocal yearning. Tanks and Recognizers is that perfect album for those days when the horizon and sky are of the same hue and for those moments where every perspective is so gorgeously blurred. - amazon

Epic45 - May Your Heart Be The Map (2007)

...epic45 gak terlalu gloomy ada part yg agak refreshing mind.. hehehe track fav gue lost in falling light sama winterbirds... -clapclapclap

It comes as no surprise to find that Epic45 grew up - and still reside - in a small rural village in the heartland of the English Midlands. Based around the nucleus of 25 year old school friends Ben Holton and Rob Glover, Epic45 have had a varied and fluid line-up since their debut in 1999, releasing a series of highly acclaimed EPs and albums. Whilst very unique in style and approach, the music and ethos of this album may recall the youthfulness of Leeds band Hood, the experimentalism of that great lost pop band from the 1990's Disco Inferno, and is likely to delight fans of the experimental label Type and their artists Helios, Xela and Goldmund. But no doubt admirers of other classic British bands such as New Order, The Durutti Column, Felt and The House of Love will also find much to immerse themselves in and start working their way through Epic45's enigmatic back catalogue. SHARESPRINGS (INDONESIA)

band Indonesia ada yg masuk ke blog http://shoegazeralive.blogspot.com/ -humanoid

Sharesprings is generally classified a noise pop band in Jakarta. Formed (2006) with lineup consists of Billie (bass & vocals), Rusli (drums), Tyza (guitar & vocals), Ardhi (vocals & guitar) employing swirling, noisy guitars in an indie rock landscape from the late 80s. The band’s inspired by Yo La Tengo, Ride, The Legends, and Rocketship.

In the beginning (2003), Ardhi relied on a dream pop band, Sasmita. Disbanded (2005), directly asked Tyza assisting him for a solo project. Later, they’re both teamed-up a band of Les Alison. One day, to complete performed they invited Rama (bass) and Rusli (drums).

Sharesprings was finally named in 2006. The band established the element of late 80 and early 90 music. With a simple structure indie pop concept combines in shoegazing style and a noisy atmosphere settings. Rama left the band who was quickly replaced by Billie.

Bridging the gap between the indie pop of Yo La Tengo and the noise twee of MBV’s early, Sharesprings intended a reputation by supporting with twee fusion for some songs. The track “Ceiling Blossom” was soon released in compilation “a College Plastic Wrap” that’s issued in campus.

Shoegazer Alive say:

Half twee half shoegazer, Sharesprings is a lovely band from Jacarta (Indonesia) formed in 2006, but seem playing together for much more time. I heard the 3 songs, and loved all.

Frightened Rabbit- Sing the Greys (2007)

Playing clever but purposefully naïve pop in the manner of the Vaselines, the Twilight Sad, and the Clean, Frightened Rabbit sound a good bit bolder than their moniker would suggest, though it suits their lively but nervous musical personality. Frightened Rabbit was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004, when guitarist Scott Hutchison and his brother Grant, a percussionist who like his sibling prefers to keep his last name a secret, began recording demos of songs they had written. Encouraged by friends and family, the brothers added a second guitarist, their friend Billy, and the trio began making the rounds of Glasgow's pubs and music venues.

Slowly but surely gaining a reputation for their work, Frightened Rabbit began work on their first album, initially planning to record at the home studio where they'd done their original demos but eventually opting to record at Glasgow's Diving Bell Studio with Marcus Mackay. Frightened Rabbit released Sing the Greys through their own Hits the Fan Records label in mid-2006. Reviews were enthusiastic, and Universal picked up the disc for distribution in the U.K. and the U.S. The group's reputation began enjoying a considerable boost in America after the they played a well-received showcase at the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX, and the independent music press in the United States, after the U.S. release of Sings, began embracing the band. -allmusic

The Sleeping Years - We're Becoming Islands One By One - 2008

Recorded in London, it follows on from the successful trilogy of EPs released in 2007. Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Dale started his first band Catchers while at school. Their debut album ‘Mute’ was recorded with Mike Hedges in France and released on Setanta Records. Dale went on to tour with Pulp, Edwyn Collins, The Divine Comedy, Dr. John and Oasis. Catchers recorded their second album ‘Stooping to Fit’ with Nick Drake’s arranger Robert Kirby.

The Sleeping Years’ music has been featured on BBC Radio 1’s Introducing, in the Guardian writers’ playlist and on a cover mount with Rolling Stone magazine. Dale has also been heavily played on Gideon Coe's BBC 6music show and on French radio – with each EP being championed by Bernard Lenoir.

The Mumlers - Thickets And Stitches - 2008

Call this pop but there's equally strong whiffs of cabaret music, smart jazz, garage rock and ambient digressions. "Shake That Medication" swings like some long lost '60s Motown single dragged into the self-help present, the loving work of kids chasing pure soul with whatever tools are at hand. There's a delightful kitchen sink aesthetic to the instrumentation, a pots & pans hoedown kept in check by an inspired reel caller. Nothing gets in the way. In fact, it's only on repeated listens that you'll pick up the breath & body in the arrangements.

Jenn Grant - Orchestra For The Moon - 2007

Definitely a good album to add to any solid collection of folky-Canadian music sung by rich voiced ladies. Jenn Grant sits nicely between Julie Doiron and Jill Barber, so it’s not surprising Jill herself is on the album (where? I don’t know yet.)

With quality production by Glenn Meisner, David Christensen and Jason MacIsaac and catchy lyrics to match, this CD is worth a listen. Too bad the single “Dreamer” takes repetition a step too far. Grant would do well to listen more closely to BSS, who have mastered the art of redundancy at the brink of breakdown.

No Kids - Come In To My House (2008)

Fueled by Julia Chirka, Justin Kellam and Nick Krgovich of P:ano, the songs somehow use countless instruments, drum machine beats and harmonies, but never does a song seem crowded. Each element is heard crisply and clearly and the results are fantastic.

The opening track, Great Escape, is an organic number with nice matching drum snares, keys, strings and horn flourishes. You quickly realize that No Kids use precise arrangements that you wouldn't expect from such a young band. Instead of constant ebbs and flows, they prefer syncopated rhythms that expose more classical, jazz roots.

They pick up the pace on the lead single, Halloween. The falsetto vocals and harmonies turn this into a funky Prince-ish track, well without tons of purple. The programmed beats dance from channel to channel, making it impossible to sit still and you engulfed by the track. The delicate strings they add just before the horn breakdown to end the song are amazing as are the picked violin strings that open the sexy R & B The Beaches All Closed. The thick reverb on the kick drum add some grit to this track. Bluster in the Air follows suit, letting some nice stabbing strings provide the frame for the trio's falsettos and nicely placed horns.

Justice Of The Unicorn - Angels With Uzis - 2008

They will rock you. Justice of the Unicorns is: Russell "Rusty" Dungan - Lead Vocals, Guitar, Jason Lam - Guitar, Daniel Forbes - Bass and lap steel, Anthony Cangelosi - Drums, and Yasmin Reshamwala - keyboards.

The talented Dungan and Lam are guilty conspirators in Tigers and Monkeys - another amazing New York band which released a tragically good rock album, "Loose Mouth," in 2007. For all their work, Tigers and Monkeys earned a spot on last year's very exclusive RSL Top 40 Artists List. I suspect there might be room Justice of the Unicorns on this year's list...

With song lyrics that sometimes make you laugh (lyrics about the movies Krull and Labyrinth) and stories that touch the heart and make you want to cry, Justice of the Unicorns' INCREDIBLE new album is one to have. "Angels with Uzis" - will be released in March on Little Lamb Recordings. It comes to you HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - one of the year's first must-have indie rock recordings.

Phosphorescent - Pride

Well here's something a bit special. Pride is actually the third album by one-man-band Phosphorescent (aka Matthew Houck), and far-removed from any run-of-the-mill approach to the singer-songwriter format, this is a record filled with multitracked atmosphere, a wealth of vocal texture and harmony. The music here achieves a bewitching, ethereal sound without Houck having to strive for it in an overt, Grouper-like fashion.

This wraith-ish quality is what distinguishes Phosphorescent from any contemporaries: you can hear every creaking floorboard on 'Be Dark Night', every gesture by Houck's multitracked self. It's like there's twenty different versions of him standing in the room all at once (think Michael Keaton Multiplicity) without the piece ever coming across as overloaded or overwrought. On 'Wolves' when Houck bemoans "Mama, there's wolves in the house", he sounds like a world-weary Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and slowly an orchestra of harmonium, ukulele and roomy percussion sounds up around him. Apparently, somewhere in there you'll hear an ensemble of guest vocalists, including Jana Hunter, but the song belongs to Houck's evocative performance. The haunted Phosphorescent recording studio really comes to life on the spine-tingling 'Cocaine Lights', a composition about post-drug, post-break-up comedowns, delivered with a gospel-like zeal: "Lord, truly I am awake" intones Houck, before ascending into a canyon-sized choral finale.

It's rare to come across an artist with such a singular, distinct voice as Houck's, and he's clearly deserving of much success, but you can only hope that wherever his career might take him he holds onto that same solitary, split-personality mode of delivery. Excellent.

July Skies - The Weather Clock (02/2008)

Genre : Indie/Experimental/Ambient

The eagerly awaited follow up to the July Skies album The English Cold is now available from Make Mine Music.

The Weather Clock is firmly planted and focused on a lost post-war Britain . The beauty of the recently constructed regimented housing estates, fresh from the municipal architects drawing board….the green of front lawns against the blue of the summer sky.....it is the sound of the empty school hall once the summer holidays had commenced.... children playing on distant grassy hills far from the edge of the estate....faded branch line summers where steam met diesel.....the sound of swallows across the fields on a fresh dew drenched May morning.....the nothingness of days and afternoons….the innocence and lightness of a breeze through an open window, striking pastel patterns on curtains which billow….the sound of BBC closing down broadcasts during the daytime and displaying the TV test card for the afternoon, whilst the country continued to work, play or learn....this is the sound of The Weather Clock.

The first 350 copies of the album will come with an exclusive CDep ˜The Weather Clock ep™ which will be available through the MMM shop only and nowhere else (with no repress or download).

Hjaltalin-Sleepdrunk Seasons

The band Hjaltalín began, two years ago, as a one-act thing in the music scene of MH, a Reykjavik gymnasium that is renowned for harbouring musicians. Things have evolved since then, personell changed, and the band has actually changed course regarding musical styles in the meantime, although the band is certainly hard to categorize with influences ranging from modern indie rock to 60’s pop music to classical music.

The group is comprised of Axel Haraldsson (drums), Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson (bass, guitar, vocals), Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhannsson (keyboards, guitar) and Högni Egilsson (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Sigríður Thorlacius (vocals, percussioun), Viktor Orri Árnason(violin), Rebekka Bryndís Björndsóttir (bassoon), Þorgbjörg Daphne Hall (cello), Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson (guitar).

Recent projects include the making of a christmas album distributed to friends and family, opening for the Icelandic reggae-band Hjálmar, gigs in some of the more renowned bars in Reykjavík and record-making. Also, the song “The trees don’t like the smoke” aired in Kastljósið, the prime time program which is aired after the evening news.

Sleepdrunk Seasons is Hjaltalín's first album. The album has been described as one of the best albums of the year and been awaited by critics and fans alike, especially after a glorious performance on Airwaves'07. Sleepdrunk Seasons was produced by Icelandic “indie” heavyweights, Benni Hemm Hemm and Gunnar Tynes (múm).
