A brief message

To those of you that has been leaving me messages and e-mails, thanks you guys... these past months I have been pretty busy with my job, some side jobs, a dog that has always been nagging me from dusk till dawn, a cat that has always been nagging my dog, roof that need to be repaired, walls that need to be painted, some books that need to be read, a long list of good music that needs to be listened to, some bills to be paid, a large sum of money to be spent ( ok, this one I lied, lol) , etc...

To squeze a little time updating this blog has been dropped on my priority list and seems impossible at the moment... and for that I am terribly sorry.

But I promise... as soon as I'm through with all of my projects, my dog, my cat, my roof, my wall, my .... well you get the idea.... indiepoppies will be back to bring you all the goodness in music for you to enjoy and you can brag again to your friends at some lame parties about music they never heard before :)

In the meantime ... all I can say now is thank you for supporting indiepoppies.

The Bishops - The Bishops (2007)

4. I Can't Stand It Anymore

Sometimes you feel like you've heard too many records; if you're a late fortysomething like me, any new band sounds like something you've heard before. The Bishops, though, make no apologies for their retro stylings on this excellent debut album. It's a pleasing melange of 60's Freak Beat and Mod stylings, and it's very good, simple as that. I'm glad they're not a cod Merseybeat combo like The Pleasers or something; they sound so retro, they actually sound contemporary, and at least aren't trying to be like Arctic Monkeys, or whatever today's kids listen to. A lot of fun, and well worth your entertainment Euros.]

Sally Shapiro - 'remix romance vol.1'

Paper Bag Records is pleased to announce the release of Remix Romance, a remix album adapted from Sally Shapiro’s 2007 stellar debut Disco Romance, will be released on April 15th. Dancing on the excitement of her recent nomination for Female Artist of the Year and Dance Album of the Year at the 2008 Plug Awards in New York City, Sally will hit North American shores once again with this very special collection of remixes by an eclectic group of International artists.

Hand-picked by Paper Bag Records and Johan Agebjörn, the artists featured on this record were already serious fans of Disco Romance – and all jumped at the chance to be involved in the project. The idea for a remix record was inspired by Skatebård’s recent remix of ‘He Keeps Me Alive’ – as well as other artists, including Lindstrøm, Holy Fuck, and DFA’s Juan MacLean. Junior Boys were especially interested, producing a characteristically sexy remix of the pop ballad ‘Jackie Jackie.’ Canadian newcomers Woodhands and The Cansecos both integrated live instrumentals into their remixes, resulting in effervescent new interpretations of Sally’s original music.

01 I'll Be by Your Side (Tensnake Remix)
02 I Know You're My Love (Juan Maclean Remix)
03 Find My Soul (Holy Fuck Remix)
04 Anorak Christmas (Woodhands Remix)
05 He Keeps Me Alive (Skatebård Remix)

Lullatone are back with their latest conceptual pop masterpiece, 'The Bedtime Beat'. This new 10 song mini-album finds the duo not only further perfecting their blend of self proclaimed pajama pop, but also taking it into new uncharted waters, literally.

The albums opens with the infectious 'Bathtime Beat' which features a drum solo of tapping water in a bathtub! Other interesting sounds to be found on the record include a bed tapped to to sound like a bass drum, snores cut up into hynopticbreathy drum beats, Yoshimi's human beatbox, marching in slippers and a full cast of toy instruments and soft sine tones intricately arranged into tiny little dazzling melodies recorded half at home and half in a music room at a Japanese elementary school.

This is both Lullatone's strangest and most pop album yet and a future classic for sure. So come on everybody let's march to sleep with the new sound of the bedtime beat!

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours (leaked / 2008)

Cut Copy took their time, but by the end of their promotional campaign for debut album, Bright Like Neon Love, they were firmly positioned as the `80s-flecked quasi-dance group it was cool to groove along to.

It certainly tired them out – they hit the highways of Australia hard and fast, then traversed the world, then came back and started all over again. The fatigue that such a schedule brings is something that they’re keen to avoid the second time around, and as such In Ghost Colours has a near universal release in all the key territories from Australia to Japan to America to Europe…and beyond!

“It all is [a promo thing],” says drummer Mitchell Scott, “but we’re playing live in a bunch of places – starting in Barcelona then to the UK and throughout Europe. These are all live shows – proper sets.”

Kuryakin & Mechanical Owl (Folktronica)

Folktronica community presents:

Kuryakin & Mechanical Owl

Kuryakin :

Petter Gjöres (vocals, guitar, computers) Johan Norberg (guitar, computers)/Sweden

Petter and Johan has been making music under the name Kuryakin since 2003. They met at the university in Uppsala 2002. Petter nowadays live in Stockholm and Johan in Uppsala. The music is put together by Petter and Johan who mails samples and ideas to eachother and then play toghether a few times a month.

We are about to release a combined EP and 7" on Shelflife Records this spring. It's our first release, but to us it's like a greatest hits album with the songs we've been working on the last couple of years and not been able to release anywhere. We will also release a 7" in Japan on Fastcut Records this spring, and later this year, an EP with completely new songs.

1. Kuryakin - A parade
2. Kuryakin - Fought a war
3. Kuryakin - Birds
4. Kuryakin - Snow

Mechanical Owl :

Mike Payne / North Wales

I live in North Wales, but travel back and forth to Leeds from time to time. I write and record the songs at home, and will soon be performing them with a band at some live shows.

I also like to get together with Mr Nicolas Burrows (Glaciers) and make up songs, there are some on the 'Mrs Dice Feet' profile (see friends list.) The songs on there are a result of Nic coming to visit for a few days. Me and Nicholas also like to get together with Mr Harry dean, and play songs as 'Crayon,' (see friends,) which is little guitar/keyboard pop band.

M83 - Saturdays = Youth (Mute, 2008)

Now that he's gotten his ambient kicks with this past fall's Digital Shades Vol. 1, Anthony Gonzalez is ready to release his fifth album as M83, titled Saturdays = Youth. The album is apparently focused on more structured songs than the Digital Shades material, though "Couleurs", available for streaming now, doesn't seem too reliant on traditional pop song structure.

As previously reported, Gonzalez recorded Saturdays with producers Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Suede, Cocteau Twins, the Sugarcubes) and Ewan Pearson (the Rapture, Ladytron). Mute will release the album on April 15.

Young Republic - 12 Tales From Winter City (2008)

Genre: Indie Rock/Pop

The Guardian review:

"Raggle-taggle art-pop bands hoping to make our wintry lives warmer are currently ten-a-penny. Thankfully, the Young Republic are lovelier than most. Rattling towards us from a Boston music college with their flutes, violins, pianos, pedal steel and African drums, the eight members make a rich, pretty noise that brings together Belle & Sebastian's gift for melody, the Modern Lovers' brightness, plus cheeky bits of vaudeville and baroque pop. Julian Saporiti's fine, characterful voice stitches everything together. However, the choral joy of She's Not Waiting Here This Time and the energetic rush of Paper Ships are the only things that lodge in the memory. There are too many ideas here, at the expense of strong songs. "

"Setelah saia dengar, ni band asik banget. Sound disco-rock nyatu ama permainan akustik. Gak heran, dibalik karya2 yang asik2 ini, berjejer orang2 penting :
Eirik Glambek-Boe (Kings of Convenience), Feist, Dan Judd (produser Sorcerer), Maria Eriksson (The Concretes) ama Lars Skoglund (Peter, Bjorn & John).

Asik banget sealbumnya. Diawal diajak goyang di I Feel Electric. Too Bright juga kerasa banget aroma KoC nya. Sisanya makin beragam. Naik turun. Gw rekomen nih album. Bagus!" -pred

The Dodos - Visiter (2008)

"ini album bagus banget, buat yg suka psychedelic-folk-pop... experimental instrument nya mirip2 gabungan animal collective + white rabbits = The dodos" -clapclapclap

Genre : Indie/Rock/Folk/Psychedelic

Long's psych-folk-pop compositions are smart and tight and melodic and his hammer-handed, fleet-fingered acoustic attack always meets Kroeger's thumps halfway, awkward toe to toe, chin to chin, heat to intensity. And his voice is great. Warm and wobbly and familiar like a brother's or a best friend's. Except (or maybe mostly?) when he's yelling like an asylum escapee -- anguished, near-inarticulate, tonsil-baring scream-sobs..." Shake Your Fist

10. The Physician
11. The Conductor's Regress
12. Sospiri

The title of the The Winston Jazz Routine's latest album (and second release for Kansas City, MO-based label The Record Machine) sums up its contents accurately. Sospiri, an Italian word meaning "Sighs", is a collection of aching and dense songs that slowly unravel to majestic heights and gently float back to firmer ground. Nathan Phillips, the band's central figure and main composer, takes his gentle piano-based material and wraps it in layer after layer of a wide assortment of instruments. The album opens with him pounding his piano while drums crash and guitars siren out in the periphery. A minute into "I See a Map" the true pace of the album is revealed. The drums and bass fall deep in the background while Phillips sighs his opening line, "My composure lacked as we walked home/counting all the butterflies that flew right around you."

Most of Sospiri is performed in this way, Phillips' characters mostly anguished and stories often tragic. "William and Betsy" describes the betrayal that leads to cancelled wedding plans with its "twenty-four pictures...in a Wal-Mart bag". The offender gets on his knees and pleads initially then finally address his former lover's obstinacy a bit more dismissively. It's not how most songs of love and loss end, but it's certainly more true to life. The following track, "A Ghost Beneath the Tower" manuevers similarly. A soft brass section scales alongside the character's family loss and reaction; "What is in your closet? Boxes stacked from left to right, packed and packed for hours." Many of these songs are set in the present-tense, the characters stepping out of one frame into another, either losing baggage as they go or carrying it with them begrudgingly. "Grandmother's Glow" starts off with pleasant enough imagery; a old, graying woman stirring boiling fruit preserves, sunshine pouring in a window. It turns painfully for the worse when the boiling pot's contents end up on Grandma while her daughter runs for paper towels. Texturally, this is the most effective track on the album, replacing the gentle drums with loops designed to mimic a closet full of canning jars being jostled around. When the drums comes back, the piano twinkles in and out of the melody, stumbling and disoriented. "The Bridge of Sighs" captures the location and experience in Venice that likely inspired the album's title; a prisoner is led to his death over Ponte dei Sospiri, a bridge built in the 16th century that connects the prisons to the interrogation rooms in Doge's Palace. He sighs to himself for his plight and for the last glimpse of Venice he is subjected to for that brief & final moment. What other way is there to react?

In addition to Nathan's songwriting and multi-instrumentation over two dozen others have performance credits on Sospiri. What is captured onto the album, however, is unyieldingly cohesive. At 12 songs and just under 53 minutes in length, it's easy to get lost in Sospiri's otherworldly gaze at, and away from, such heartbreaking tales, but the beautiful arrangements act as a contrast and, ultimately, bring a balance to all the suffering.

Near The Parenthesis - Of Soft Construction (2007)

mirip2 july skies.. dengan sentuhan electro - Kid_A

San Francisco based musician Tim Arndt brings his Near the Parenthesis project to n5MD with the release of his second album "Of Soft Construction." This sophomore effort finds Arndt luring his potent song writing capabilities to the forefront yielding something truly exceptional. Spiraling piano sonnets are juxtaposed against sweeping cascades of grainy synth-washes and agile, yet carefully executed, beat-work. Add in an occasional mid radio station listen-in on a seemingly unfinished conversation and you have an idea of "Of Soft Construction's" perfected audible DNA. Near the Parenthesis has proven that he is yet another artist to capture the n5MD ethos in its truest most honest form..

The Ark - Prayer for the Weekend (2007)

This is the guys fourth and most recent album.

Again, another fabulous album with lots more great tunes. "Prayer for the Weekend" is the opening song (the video to this is excellent too), followed by their entry into the 2007 Eurovision song contest "The Worrying Kind" - with a 1970's glam rock feel to it. They have produced another potential rock anthem in "Absoloutely No Decorum", and "Little Dysfunk You" is very addictive as is "I Pathologise" and "All I Want Is You."

What more can I say? I can't wait for their next album! [amazon]

Animal Collective - Water Curses Ep

Animal Collective's long-promised new EP Water Curses is due May 5 in the UK and May 6 in the U.S. on 12" and CD from Domino. The four-song collection is the follow-up to Pitchfork's #6 favorite album of 2007, Strawberry Jam.

The EP's first three tracks were produced by Scott Colburn at Tucson's Wavelab Studio during the same sessions that produced Strawberry Jam. The last, "Seal Eyeing", was recorded at Nicolas Vernhes' Rare Book Room Studio (home of the Living Bridge compilation), with Vernhes handling mixing duties for all four tunes. "All tracks find Animal Collective exploring strange new waters," says a press release. Sounds about right.

The Collective's tour plans, which we mentioned a while back, have slowly been getting a tad busier as the festival lineups come trickling in. Since our last check, the band have added dates at both Norway's Hove Festival and New Jersey's All Points West.

Lacrosse - This New Year Will Be For You and Me (2007)

genre: indie pop

Lacrosse is the national game of Canada. It is also the hometown of serial killer Ed Gein. But above all, Lacrosse is five boys and one girl making fantastic pop music. From a basement in Stockholm, Lacrosse brings you love and happiness in songs so catchy that you can't help singing along!

With a lot of energy, two intense lead vocalists, incredibly sweet guitar melodies and blazing drum beats, Lacrosse is the musical equivalent of endless summer nights when the world is young and beautiful and everything seems possible.

The debut album "This New Year Will Be For You And Me" was released in November and you can hear Lacrosse in Daniel Espinosa's feature film "Outside Love" in Denmark. If you're lucky, you can catch Lacrosse on tour in February 2008 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. [myspace]

my personal keytracks: No More Lovesongs, You Can't Say No Forever, My Plan, Who Will Bring Us Together?

Pacific - Reveries (2008)

Genre: Electro / Indie Pop / Surf

Pacific is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their music's has that heavy/sweet indie-pop feel mixed with 80's synths, makes it even more fun to listen to the album. Not exactly a masterpiece (thou I'll be waiting anxiously for their next album), but definitely will takes you back in time..., and humming to their songs after a few listens.
